Fairy floss.

Lately I have been pondering the months to come, summer and heat and the outdoor cinema, and the colour palette that has consistently come to mind for me is 'fairy floss'.
Insert the term you would usually use here, 'candy floss', 'cotton candy', 'spun sugar'.

The way it gets packed into buckets or bags, lines of pink and blue and yellow, all as light as air and almost iridescent.

There's a certain kind of colour that taps into the fairy floss aesthetic - it's almost pastel, but it doesn't have to be, and it's not only blue, pink and yellow. It has to have an otherworldly-quality, a sheen or a joyful lightness that sets it apart and emanates giggly joyousness and a deep breath of fresh air. The feeling you get when you see cherry blossoms outlined against a heartbreakingly pale-bright blue sky is what you're going for.

You should be able to inhale it the way you can inhale fairy floss, almost without knowing it's there but with a quick burst of sweetness that lingers on your tongue.

Here are some images that have a fairy floss aesthetic to me - I'd love to hear about any others you might find!

  1. mm "fairy floss"... the term is perfect. I also think of pale winter trees against a barely blue sky.
