Tuesday Noir Nights had an unscheduled break last week due to Toby's hitting the wall, inspiration-wise, which happened to co-incide with a terrible noir example - The Glass Key, starring Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd, was a total washout and got unceremoniously scrapped from the list.
This week we're back with a vengeance reviewing the same actors in an infinitely better noir, This Gun For Hire, based on a Graham Greene novel. Click on over for the full review and more pictures.
It was an excellent film, extremely enjoyable, classic Graham Greene despite the fact that its setting and characters were changed drastically from the original material. From watching The Glass Key I would have told you that I didn't like Veronica Lake at all, but it turns out that was just how bad that film was: she's great in this one, funny, droll, right on target for the type of character she should be, although I imagine Greene's version of her was a lot less... spunky?
The shots on the bridge at the end were absolutely breathtaking, and really made the film memorable.
The only thing I still reserve the right to say about Veronica Lake is that the woman wore some damned silly hats...

thats not even factoring the hats from the glass key!
ReplyDeletelovely blog you have here! i agree with you, those hats are pretty funky. haha!

I like how noir stills are so characteristically shadowy :)
